The characters are pretty one-note, especially the lead Kyle who gets pretty insufferable, but early on the mystery and tension really carry the book. It was hard to tell which with these people: the successful, the owners of things, the commissioners and controllers he'd dealt with as a film-maker. Kyle is believable and largely sympathetic – the way he becomes engrossed by The Temple of the Last Days is alarming yet realistic.I did enjoy the ending of the book as the evil begins to really make it's presence known and Kyle realises he can't run from it anymore.

I was absolutely astonished with where the plot went and the last quarter of the book is gripping and terrifying. Too many questions, instincts, and suspicions would not settle inside him or evolve into coherence, into language. I really love the way this story was presented, more of a look back at what happened rather than being in the midst of it.But then all of a sudden he starts talking about a “large plastic tent” in the middle of the room that had never been mentioned before. Nevill really took his time to create a number of working pieces that when they all came together left me stunned and breathless.
